Baker Unsure of 2015 Parramatta Cup Success for Burbero

February 20th, 2015

Talented six-year-old Burbero has found exceptional form over his recent racing starts, however trainer Bjorn Baker is unsure whether he will continue his successful run of form through Saturday’s Listed Parramatta Cup (1900m) after being allocated a weighting of 57.5kgs.

Posting an impressive record of eleven wins and a further seven minor places over his 32 competitive appearances on course so far, Burbero is aiming to secure his second career hat-trick of wins on Saturday after taking out the TAB Rewards Mile (1600m) and TAB Rewards Handicap (1500m) over his two latest starts.

Having carried just 52kgs and 53kgs respectively in those events, Baker is thrilled with the condition of the O’reilly gelding and the allocated of barrier 5 but conceded the six-year-old may find the sharp rise in weights at black type level a difficult task.

“He’s in great form, don’t get me wrong, and he’s drawn ideally, but he has spent this prep down in the weights with claims and things and tomorrow that isn’t the case,” Baker told TVN.

“I’ve got a change of rider tomorrow – Hugh Bowman – I’m hoping that’s a good thing, but he certainly goes up sharply in the weights.

“There is nothing to suggest he’s had enough but surely there can’t be a lot left in the tank after he’s had such a long prep.”

Securing several commendable results for Baker through 2014, Burbero won the Big Sports Breakfast BM75 (1250m) on May 28th; progressing to third behind winter specialist Generalife and You’ll Never in the Gaypak United Fruit (1350m) on June 14th before returning to the winner’s circle in the McGrath Estate Agents BM85 (1300m) most notably on July 12th.

Taking out the Phillip Hughes Tribute (1150m) on December 6th, the gelding out of Royal Remedy placed second in two Rosehill Gardens minors over 1400m and 1350m respectively leading into his two recent triumphs. is currently offering the best 2015 Parramatta Cup odds, for which Burbero remains outright second-favourite for success at a quote of $6.50.
